Then why is hair a fetish in warm places? It must be stiflingly hot to keep a full head of hair under a scarf. I think you’re right, that boobs will likely always be a fetish in northerly climes. Except possibly for the Polar Bear club…

It’s not filed under “all wrong,” it’s posted on “allwrong.com,” where all the cool kids come to snark at That which is Foolish. Fetishisation to the point of oppression is foolish. Good post, I like the parallel, and think you’re really on to something.

The countries where boobs are no big deal are all places where it’s warm enough that a woman can let them dangle all year round. In northern Europe, I think boobs will always be a huge hangup for men, because most of the year women wear too much clothing for anyone to see how they’re really built.

I’m not sure I follow that reasoning. What if a lady, 8.5 months pregnant, decides she wants an abortion–are you saying nobody has any say in whether she gets one? Even the father? (Which is why I said “stakeholders” in my post; maybe it’s my gender talking, but I feel like the father should have a voice, too!).

speaking of being “pro-individual.” in the last few weeks i’ve read a lot on the state of abortion in the states. i think what’s stuck with me most has been the idea that if you believe there are *ever* circumstances that make abortion acceptable, even in the most extreme and hypothetical scenario, then you *must* agree that there’s no better person to decide when the circumstances point to abortion than the pregnant woman herself. no law on the books, no legislator, no third (or even second) party has any reason to have any thing to do with her decision unless she wants them to. (only whoever said it first was much more smoothly coherent and convincing.)

I thought I’d blogged about it here, actually, and looked so I could link to it, but to no avail.

I remember the blogosphere uproaring a number of months ago about PP clinics ignoring abortion-reporting laws for minors, badgering underage clients, doing some serious whinging when they were called on it.

Google isn’t much help–all the coverage I can find now is from cut-and-dry pro-life sources, and frankly, I feel squirrely about citing anyone with that big an axe to grind. (Not that I’m cyncial or anything.)
